Introduction of Updated RMR Form
UPDATE
Following consultation with the AMS Nutrition Working Group, both the RMR Parvo and RMR First Principles forms have been reviewed and updated. The aim of this work has been to align with the new AIS RMR Measurement National Testing Protocol.
Development has been undertaken within the current technical constraints of the AMS platform.
KEY CHANGES
Pre-measurement checklist:
- Consent: Prior to testing an athletes RMR, either via the Parvomedics Metabolic Cart or First Principles, written consent is required. For the initial assessment, documentation of consent should be uploaded into the relevant data entry RMR form, however for subsequent tests, verbal consent is sufficient (with confirmation recorded via a tick box). A copy of the RMR Informed Consent form is available to download at the bottom of this article.
- The testing practitioner should indicate that the athlete has received appropriate pre-RMR measurement guidelines.
- The purpose of testing should be documented.
- There is a downloadable copy of the RMR Data Collection Sheet is available within the RMR Measurement National Testing Protocol document at the bottom of this article, to use if you do not have access to the AMS at the time of testing.
Testing Details:
- Method of collection: If testing is taking place with a mouthpiece, the size of the mouthpiece should also be recorded to ensure consistency between tests.
Physique data:
- The latest DXA details will now appear in this section, for ease of entering physique data.
Calibration Details – Parvo RMR form only:
- Practitioners will now need to enter Parvo specific data in this section, including:
- Parvo Serial Number
- Whether Gas Calibration was performed and achieved a result of <1%
- Whether Flowmeter Calibration was performed and received a result of <1.5%
- Whether verification has taken place against MaxII calibration (i.e. formal calibration undergone by the AIS QA team biannually).
Post-Measurement Questions:
- Eleven questions have been added to this form to help assess the quality of the test and ensure consistency in subsequent tests.
Results:
- The results section now allows for comparison with previous RMR assessments, as it relates to both absolute and relative RMR measures as well as the RMR ratio.
Comments and recommendations:
- Two new sections have been added to allow the testing practitioner and/or the practitioner interpreting the data to comment on the test conditions and provide an interpretation of results. Interventions/actions can be added here.
- Any additional notes can also be added in retrospect.
Data removed:
- Alongside measures have been removed from both forms.
- The section to enter a third set of measurement data in the First Principles form. A third set of measurement data can be added only if needed.
Suggested Use
These forms should be used when conducting a Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) assessment on an athlete. The appropriate form should be selected based on the assessment method being used (i.e. First Principles or ParvoMedics Metabolic Cart).
The revised forms are designed with ease of use in mind. They intend to support repeatability of test conditions between assessments, facilitate calculation of absolute RMR, relative RMR (kJ/kg FFM/day) and the RMR ratio, and to ensure that informed consent and key assessment information are documented in a standardised manner.
Practitioners are encouraged to complete the form during the RMR assessment to ensure all required information is captured accurately and in real time. Where key information is not immediately available (e.g. DXA results), the accompanying RMR data collection form from the AIS RMR Measurement National Testing Protocol may be used during testing, with information transferred to the final assessment form once all results are available.
What happens next
- The updated RMR forms will go live from Monday 17th of August.
- All previous data will be maintained.
- Additional guidance materials (including screenshots) can be located within this help site to support the use of the updated form.
